"OUR HISTORY"
The Horry County Shelter Home is a private, non-profit facility
whose mission is to provide quality emergency temporary residential
care for the abused, neglected, and abandoned children of Horry
County. Initial efforts to organize the Shelter Home began in the
Autumn of 1973. A number of concerned residents within the
community attempted to raise funds for the proposed home. During
the planning stages, The United Way of Horry County approved the
Shelter Home as a member agency and provided much needed funds
for the Shelter Home to initiate renovations of the donated beach
house. In May of 1975, after months of hard work and many
answered prayers, the dream of providing emergency, temporary ,
loving care to any child who needed it, in a comfortable, home-like
environment, became a reality when the Horry County Shelter Home
first opened its doors. In November 1992, responding to critical
demands for additional space for Horry County's disadvantage
children, a second dwelling became operational, enabling the Shelter
Home to nearly triple its service capability to 28 beds. Since then,
more than 4,135 Horry County children have resided and received
care from our facility. In the past few years, an annual average of
220 Horry County children passed through our doors.
